Titi22 Posté(e) 23 mai 2022 Signaler Share Posté(e) 23 mai 2022 Hi people from The east and north side of the Rhone river are called Allobroges (gaulish sentence meaning coming from elsewhere). They have been using Massalia coinage for local trade since the fourth century. During the second punic war part of these people provided assistance to Annibals Barca army during their trip from Cartago nova to Roma through the Alps mountain. Polybe a greek general which was in admiration for Annibal reconstituted this incredible travel and provided a lot of detailed information to modern history. The Allobroges probably obtained a lot of punic silver when refurbishing their army to cross the Alps. Starting from this a lot of unusual coinage appeared in this region. The Ialkovesi dracma, the Kaisos dracma corresponding to about four Massalia obols. Both dracmas represent the head of a horse. This denar also represents strangely the head of a horse but in a Roman weight system. Rome had prevailed against Annibals army and Allobroge people kept some memory of their past history when representing this hippocamp. Also surprisingly the helmet represented in the 1.5 massaliotan obol with eagle in the reverse. Allobroges were submitted to Roma since about -120 bc. Regards.
