D'après Simon Coupland (The Melle coins of Charlemagne and Charles the Bald), ce type daterait du début du règne de Charles II, juste après la reprise de l'Aquitaine à Pépin II. La légende linéaire aurait eu pour but de mieux différencier ses monnaies de celles de Pépin. Charles II serait ensuite revenu à la légende circulaire, frappée en masse à Melle. "The second mint-signed type has the mint name META - LLVM filling the reverse field: it is represented in two hoards, Brioux-sur-Boutonne and Plessé (Coupland, 2011a: nos.99, 101) and by just two single finds. It was probably minted for a short periodin 848, after Charles wrested control of Melle back from his nephew Pippin II, to whom he had been forced to grant sovereignty over the area in 845. The introduction of a new and quite different coinage type would demonstrate even to the illiterate the change of ruler."
