Je ne sais si vous pourrez m'aider, mais j'ai récemment trouvé un bouton sur lequel figurait l'inscription :

"Ludovicus Rex Plures Non Capit Orbis"

Pouvez-vous me donner l'origine et la datation approximative de ce bouton.

On m'a adressé cette suggestion par mail:

My translation of that Latin phrase is "King Ludwig, No greater world ruler". This would make sense in regards to the Hessian mercenary army that was fighting for the British during the American Revolution. The button I found is in ground that has yielded various other artifacts from the era of 1776.

I have a small leather bag /satchel with a metal emblem bearing the same words. Any idea of the provenance of this bag? What could it have been used for?

I attach two photo of the bag.

I am based in Edinburgh, Scotland and can find no reference to such a bag.

I can understand French (but not well enough to write), so feel free to answer in French!
